Director General of Police (DGP) for Jammu and Kashmir, Dilbag Singh, emphasised the need for continuous vigilance against continuous threats from across the border. DGP Singh, who is set to retire on October 31, expressed his commitment to the force after serving for 30 years and welcomed Special DG CID RR Swain as his successor.
The DGP was talking to media persons at the Armed Police Complex Zewan after launching 160 state-of-the-art vehicles for 43 police stations under Operation Capacity Building (Op CAP). He underlined the importance of not taking security threats lightly and the necessity for continued caution due to the prevailing threats.
He said that a police officer in the Eidgah area of Srinagar was playing cricket with colleagues when he was attacked by terrorists, and he is currently undergoing treatment and recovering.
The police chief said his retirement is set for October 31, with special DG CID RR Swain taking over as the new DGP of Jammu and Kashmir.
“I am not leaving the police force, a policeman is always a policeman, and intends to stay with the force, having served for 30 years,” DGP said.
Regarding the deployment of 160 state-of-the-art vehicles for 43 police stations as part of Operation Capacity Building (Op CAP), he expressed the goal of achieving “Zero terror in the area falling under the police station.”
Discussing recent infiltration attempts, DGP Singh mentioned the strength of the border security grid but noted that terrorists are still being pushed across the border from the neighboring country.
He cited recent encounters where terrorists were neutralized in the Machil Sector and Kupwara district.
Regarding the injured police officer, he said that one of our officers had gone out and was playing in a cricket ground where he was shot at by a terrorist.
He said that the officer is injured and is recovering. “Threats are still around and added that we have to be very careful,” DGP Singh said.
In response to questions about ceasefire violations in the Arnia sector in Jammu, he stated that investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the firing incident and expressed hope that the ceasefire would continue for the well-being of border residents.
He acknowledged the potential for more infiltration attempts, particularly with the neighboring country’s upcoming elections.
“Both police and security agencies would closely monitor developments and take appropriate measures to address any additional challenges,” DGP Singh said.
He emphasized that whether there are elections or not, the neighboring country continues to send terrorists across the border, and security forces are prepared to respond to any situation.
DGP Singh said that Pakistan agencies are attempting to push in more terrorists here but our troops are alert and fully prepared to thwart the ill designs of the enemies.
He said that most of the infiltrating terrorists were killed on the borders. The border security grid is very strong and the troops deployed would surely be able to take care of the borders, the police chief said.
On the occasion, DGP Singh said that dedicating these vehicles to the force is an important step to strengthen peace in UT.
DGP Singh said J&K Police has emerged a much stronger force with availability of greater resources and added that the resolve of the force is very strong to face any challenge which he said is very satisfying for him.
With regard to Line of Control and IB, the DGP said the arrangements are firmly in place adding that troops deployed on borders are having very high morale and are covering every inch of our land.
He said that the day he visited Kupwara five terrorists were killed in an encounter and today another encounter is going on, updates of which are being collected, he added.
” Troops are firmly in control of the situation on the border and if you see this year most of the encounters have taken place on the Line of Control,” he added.
The vehicles which were dedicated to the force included Isuzu Twairt/Shaurya Light Combat Vehicles, medium Leyland Combat Vehicles, Bolero Campers allotted to different special operations group units, police stations, and Battalions.
He said that these vehicles are not just vehicles but have a huge role in protecting our personnel and strengthening the safe and secure environment which is why we call them “Rakshak”.
“Dents and damage marks on our vehicles which used to get targeted by misguided people as also by terrorists speak of the struggle and efforts put in by J&K Police in strengthening peace and tranquility in the UT, ” DGP Singh said.
Earlier in his address, he said that J&K Police has emerged as a stronger force with availability of greater resources and strong resolve to face future challenges.
The function was attended by Spl DG CID J&K R.R Swain, ADGsP S.J.M Gillani, M.K Sinha, Vijay Kumar, DIsG of Police, Sujit Kumar, Vivek Gupta, Shri Shahid Mehraj Rather, Shri Abdul Qayoom, AIsG of Police Headquarters, Commandants of Kashmir based IRP/AP Battalions were present on the occasion.
