In their first joint summit, leaders of the European Union and Central Asian countries expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan and emphasized their support for the Afghan people in this regard.

In a joint statement, they emphasized their strong commitment to “seeing Afghanistan develop into a secure, stable, and prosperous state with inclusive government and governance systems that respect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all its citizens, including women, girls, and persons belonging to ethnic and religious groups and minorities; that is at peace with itself and its neighbours; and that respects its international obligations.”

During the summit, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, expressed hope that the international community would support constructive engagement with Afghanistan’s interim government and the implementation of its international commitments.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev, highlighting Afghanistan’s important role in regional developments, said, the global community underestimates all challenges emerging from the territory of this country.

However, António Costa, President of the European Council, stated that “after years of successful cooperation it is time to take our partnership with Central Asia to the next level, deepening trade, strengthening regional collaboration and expanding people-to-people ties.” He added, “Consistency, predictability and ambition will continue to drive our joint efforts.”

The statement also mentioned full and equal access to education in accordance with international standards and the participation of women and girls in public life in Afghanistan. It also supported the continuation of regular consultations of Special Representatives and Envoys of the Central Asian States and the EU.

Furthermore, the participants welcomed the inclusion of the regional Transport and Logistical Hub in Termez into the UNHCR’s Global Supply Network and noted the importance of its role in effectively distributing humanitarian supplies to Afghanistan.

The first EU–Central Asia summit was hosted yesterday (Friday, April 4) by the President of Uzbekistan in the city of Samarkand.
