The construction of four power plants in Herat has resumed after nearly four years of suspension.

These power plants, built by Breshna Company, are being developed with a budget of $2 million and will supply electricity to 40,000 families in the districts of Karkh, Pashtun Zarghun, Obeh, and Chesht in Herat.

Abdul Bari Omar, CEO of Breshna Company, stated: “These power plants, which remained incomplete and were previously financed by the World Bank, will now be completed with an investment of $2 million from Breshna Company, providing electricity to approximately 40,000 families in four districts of Herat.”

Government officials emphasize that sufficient funds are available for implementing development projects in the country and assure that large-scale development projects will be launched to achieve self-sufficiency in Afghanistan.

Ahmad Jan Bilal, head of state-owned companies, said: “The Islamic Emirate has participated in development projects to the best of its ability and remains focused on the country’s progress.”

In the previous government, the construction of these four power plants was funded by the World Bank; however, following recent political changes in the country, the World Bank withdrew its financial support for the project.

Alauddin Salim, head of the contracting company, stated: “This project was previously funded by the World Bank, but after recent developments and the establishment of the Islamic Emirate, the World Bank refused to finance the remaining work on the project.”

The provision of electricity to eastern districts of Herat has been a longstanding demand of residents in these areas. Salma Dam, located in eastern Herat, is expected to supply part of the electricity needs of these districts.
