The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) in Balochistan has imposed a ban on passenger buses traveling between Quetta and Punjab on Saturday and Sunday, citing “unavoidable circumstances.”
An official notification issued on Friday directed transporters to comply with the restrictions, warning that violations would result in strict action. However, the notification did not provide specific reasons for the travel ban.
Transporters and passengers have expressed concerns about the disruption, as hundreds of vehicles use these routes daily, connecting Quetta to other parts of Pakistan, including Punjab and Karachi.
While the notification did not provide an official explanation, sources suggest the decision may be linked to heightened security risks, including potential attacks by Baloch armed groups.
The travel ban comes amid rising tensions in the region. In recent months, Baloch “pro-independence” armed groups have increased their activities.
On November 13, Baloch Raaji Aajoi Sangar (BRAS), a coalition of Baloch armed groups, carried out 45 attacks in various parts of Balochistan to mark Baloch Martyrs’ Day.
Earlier in August, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) launched “Operation Herof,” targeting military installations, key highways, and resource-carrying vehicles in several districts, including Bela. The group claimed the operation resulted in significant casualties among military and government personnel.
It is important to note that this is the second travel restriction announced within days. Earlier, the RTA advised transporters to avoid nighttime travel on Wednesday, November 20. Officials did not provide a reason for that advisory either.
