Denmark’s Immigration Service has announced that as of September 18, 2024, extended Afghan passports are no longer recognized by the Danish government, and Afghan residents in the country must obtain new Afghan passports.
According to Schengen News, citing the Danish Immigration Service, Afghan citizens can travel to Afghanistan to obtain new passports. However, Afghan nationals who hold political asylum in Denmark are eligible to receive a Danish political passport.
The Schengen News report states: “As of September 18, 2024, Denmark no longer recognises extended Afghan national passports. This means that Afghan citizens with this type of passport must contact the Afghan authorities to obtain a new national passport.”
Some Afghan residents in Denmark urged the interim government of Afghanistan to pay serious attention to addressing the challenges faced by Afghan migrants abroad.
Hekmatullah Hekmat, an Afghan resident in Denmark, commented: “Not only Denmark but other European countries also no longer recognize extended Afghan passports. This is an issue that affects family economics, travel problems, and identity verification challenges.”
Another Afghan resident in Denmark, Toryalai Zazi, said: “The Islamic Emirate must make every effort to accept the legitimate demands of world countries, engage with them, and in turn, the world should also engage with the Taliban so that this issue faced by our fellow citizens living as refugees abroad is resolved.”
Although the Islamic Emirate has not commented on this matter, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate announced on July 30 of this year that consular services for Afghanistan are not accepted in some Western countries.
