The acting foreign minister of the Islamic Emirate, Amir Khan Muttaqi, during his visit to Qatar, met with the country’s prime minister and foreign minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to discuss the current situation in Afghanistan and Qatar’s continued support for the Afghan people.

In a statement, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that during the meeting, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani assured Amir Khan Muttaqi that Qatar would continue to support all segments of the Afghan population.

Amir Khan Muttaqi traveled to Qatar Sunday evening, following an official invitation from the Qatari prime minister.

Aziz Maharaj, a former diplomat, commented: “There has been no negative interference by Qatar in Afghanistan’s affairs, and the Afghan people have a positive view of Qatar. Therefore, expanding relations with Qatar is in Afghanistan’s interest, as it helps broaden Afghanistan’s diplomatic reach and contributes to ending its isolation. It is also beneficial for trade and economic relations.”

Qatar is known for maintaining close ties with the United States, and political analysts said that Amir Khan Muttaqi’s meeting with Qatari officials should focus on developing political engagement with the United States and European countries.

Amanullah Hotaki, a political affairs expert, said: “Our foreign minister’s trip to Qatar is beneficial. Qatar is important because it maintains close relations with the United States and has established good relations with much of the world. Additionally, representatives from many countries are based in Qatar.”

Another political expert, Abdul Sadiq Hamidzoy, stated: “If we look at the commonalities between Afghanistan and Qatar, there is a significant closeness. So far, Qatar’s involvement in Afghan affairs has never been with ill intent. Qatar has played a positive role regarding Afghanistan, and there is optimism that Qatar will continue to be a fruitful and constructive partner for Afghanistan, especially in the political sphere.”

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council yesterday announced the granting of a one-week travel exemption for Amir Khan Muttaqi.

The UN Sanctions Committee stated that Muttaqi’s travel from April 27 to May 4, 2025, for meetings with Qatari officials had been authorized.
