The G20 leaders met in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19, 2024, to address major global challenges and crises and promote strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth. The summit, hosted by Brazil, concluded today, Tuesday (November 19), with the adoption of a joint declaration.
In the declaration, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to building a just world and a sustainable planet while leaving no one behind. They emphasized the urgent need for reforming global governance and strengthening efforts to fight hunger, poverty, and inequality while promoting sustainable development in its economic, social, and environmental dimensions.
Expressing deep concern about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the escalation in Lebanon, the G20 leaders emphasized the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance, protect civilians, and remove barriers to large-scale aid delivery. They reiterated their unwavering commitment to the vision of a two-state solution where Israel and a Palestinian State live side by side in peace within secure and recognized borders, consistent with international law and UN resolutions.
The leaders also addressed the war in Ukraine, recalling the discussions in New Delhi. They highlighted the human suffering and the war’s negative impacts on global food and energy security, supply chains, macro-financial stability, inflation, and growth. The declaration welcomed all relevant and constructive initiatives that support a comprehensive, just, and durable peace in line with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter.
Sustainable peace in the world and a world free of nuclear weapons are other topics addressed in this declaration.
