On the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the UN Secretary-General has held discussions with leaders from several countries concerning the situation in Afghanistan.
In a statement, the United Nations said that the Secretary-General discussed the regional situation and Afghanistan with the Prime Minister of Pakistan and also held consultations about Afghanistan with the President of Switzerland.
Meanwhile, Qatar’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, on the sidelines of the General Assembly session, highlighted the importance of respecting women’s right to education, economic participation, and other essential freedoms for women and girls in Afghanistan.
Lolwah Al-Khater, Qatar’s Minister of State for International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated: “The fundamental rights and freedoms of women, girls, and all people in Afghanistan must be respected, protected, and fulfilled, just like human rights everywhere else, must be respected, protected, and fulfilled.”
“There needs to be dialogue with the officials of the Islamic Emirate and discussions with them to find solutions to the problems. I don’t think that side meetings and discussions there will solve Afghanistan’s issues,” Edris Mohammadi Zazai, a political analyst, told TOLOnews.
The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly began on the 24th of this month (September) and will continue for five days.
Suhail Shaheen, the head of the Islamic Emirate’s political office in Qatar, yesterday responded to some criticisms about Afghanistan, stating that instead of criticism, the world should take the path of engagement with the Islamic Emirate.
